LIÉ'S GUIDE TO TOKYO & KYOTO
Japan holds a special place in our hearts.
In the fall of last year, we visited Japan for the very first time, and it was nothing short of magical. Fall in Japan is stunning, with crisp air and the leaves transforming into
a mesmerizing palette of red, orange, and gold.
We ate our way through both Tokyo and Kyoto, discovering incredible food and vibrant local spots at every turn. It was an unforgettable experience — exploring bustling streets, serene temples, and the captivating beauty of Japan’s autumn landscapes.
Scroll down to see some of the photos we snapped during our time in Japan and read our recommendations from these breathtaking cities.
Lots of love,
Amalie & Cecilie
Eat here:Udon Shin / A small udon place located in Shinjuku. They serve a delicious bowl of udon and tempura. Be aware that the wait is long as there is only a few seats, but you can sign up for table and have a browse around Shinjuku while you wait.
Gooudo / The dining bar Gooudo in Kyoto right near the station served the best meal we’ve had in all of Japan. Local vegetables, fresh fish and meat is wood grilled just in front of you by the talented chefs. The space only have a limited amount of seating in the bar so you will need to book beforehand.
Nakajo / A little south from Tokyo in Yokohama you can get the absolute best Omakase. We ate some of the best sushi we’ve ever had here! Bookings is needed!
Kushiwakamaru Yakitori / A very chill and local Yakitori place in Nakameguro. Great for some ice cold beers and chicken skewers! |
Drink here:Grandfathers / A dark and smokey but charming speakeasy bar located in the basement of a building in the middle of bustling Shibuya. The bartenders spin vinyl records and serve great cocktails. Highly recommend their martini!
Fuglen Tokyo / Fuglen serves great coffee in the daytime and a delicious negroni in the evening in their dim lit space. Popular and busy spot which is great for people watching.
Weekenders Coffee / Located at the end of a parking lot in Kyoto you get served a really great cup of coffee over the counter. |
Enjoyable places:Yoyogi park / A stunning green space in the middle of bustling Tokyo. A long stroll in the park is unbeatable, also great for dog-spotting some of the most well groomed furry dogs ;)
Daikanyama & Nakameguro / The area of Daikanyama and Nakameguro is one of our favourite areas of Tokyo. Great for walking around and exploring stores and amazing food spots.
Kyoto on bike / Kyoto is great for biking and I highly recommend exploring the city on a bike. Easy to get to the tempels or to explore the different areas of the city. |
Shop here:Gion in Kyoto / In the Gion area in Kyoto you will find some great shopping. Traditional accessories, handmade lamps, Ceramics, incense, korean skincare and much more can be found in small shops here. I bought some traditional hair clips and really eyed out an straw bag that I still think about
The Lemaire Store / The newly opened Lemaire Store in Ebisu is worth a visit! The store is located in a beautiful architectual house from the 60’s. A different and interesting retail experience which we love to explore! |
